Why Manchester United Should Turn Down Potential £30m Bid For Defensive Star

Report:

Contractual negotiations have become one of the most tiresome facets of modern football. A time when money is extremely high on the priority list for many, footballers take their own sweet time before extending their contracts. Thus, Jose Mourinho’s frustrations regarding the possible extension of Marcos Rojo’s stay at Manchester United is quite understandable.

The Argentine defender was one of the first signings of Louis Van Gaal’s era at United. Signed after a solid World Cup in 2014, Rojo has somewhat lived up to the hype surrounding him. Though his injuries have let him down at times, the defender has been solid otherwise, keeping in line with the manager’s instructions and carving a niche for himself over the course of his stay.

His tough tackling abilities sit well with Jose’s philosophy and Rojo will always put in his sweat and blood to save a possible goal. True, he does get malicious and rash with his challenges at times, but the sheer commitment and dedication that he displays is commendable. He also likes to commit forward and tries to build the play from the back by surging ahead at times.

Last season, Rojo was enjoying probably the best spell in his career prior to an ACL injury he suffered in April. He represented United 21 times in the Premier League last season and averaged around nine defensive actions per game. Rojo won 51% of his duels and recorded an impressive 62% successful aerial duels in the league last campaign. This season, he has been eased into the league and has made seven appearances so far.

It is believed that Jose sees him as a potential replacement to the likes of Chris Smalling in the playing XI as the Englishman has been far too sloppy at times. Rojo is an interesting figure in the team, as he has divided opinion all through his United career. Personally, I feel that he is immense to the team now and perfectly fits Jose’s billing of the quintessential tough centre back.

He is strong in the air, quick on his feet, can read the game decently and is always eager to surge ahead to help create some chances. Though he has been used sporadically this season, it is mainly because of the horrific injury he suffered last year.

Making a comeback after spending seven months on the sidelines is no easy task and Jose certainly knows how and when to use Marcos Rojo perfectly. PSG are reportedly preparing a £30 million bid for the centre-back but it looks unlikely that the gaffer would let one of his favourites depart. Marcos Rojo is one of the few players from the LVG era who have impressed Jose and his departure should not happen soon.

PSG might have to go back empty-handed, for a change!
