16 goals and 6 assists: Why Arsenal should make a move for French superstar

arsenal lineup

Though Arsenal fans were more than content when the club signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan before the end of the transfer window, the club’s terrible form has once again cast a sombre mood around the Emirates. Arsene Wenger’s side were beaten in what was the most one-sided 1-0 in the North London derby and a win against Ostersund is hardly going to make up for that.

The Gunners are underdogs in the race for the top four but have a good chance in the Europa League if they can be consistent. Yet, there’s no doubt that they need a better squad come summer if they are to challenge the top four or even put up a title fight.

They need to strengthen their defence is imperative but recent reports indicate the Gunners could move in for Nabil Fekir. The Frenchman is having a stellar season in France and has caught quite a few eyes.

His agent, Jean Pierre Bernes, revealed, “Will Fekir still be at OL next season? It’s too early to talk about it,”

Fekir – fact file

The Frenchman first made an appearance for the Lyon senior side in 2013 and was touted to move to a bigger club at the end of the 2014-15 season. However, a cruciate ligament rupture meant he was out of action for nearly a whole season.

The season prior to his injury, he mustered impressive numbers of 13 goals and 12 assists as Lyon finished second behind Champions PSG. Fekir formed a brilliant understanding with the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Yoann Gourcuff.

After returning from his injury, Fekir understandably took a bit of time to get back to his fluent best, but after he did, he has been unstoppable. So far this season, he has been in stunning form, scoring 16 goals and assisting six from the attacking midfield position.

What will he add to Arsenal?

The Gunners have relied on Ozil to bring the creativity. However, Fekir could be the change they sorely need. For far too long, Arsenal have been lagging behind simply because they haven’t been able to change their style away from home. Ozil is the perfect player for their style of passing and probing for an opening. Fekir, on the other hand, is a pretty fast dribbler who could be deadly on the counter.

Signing Fekir could be the change in approach the club sorely needs to be more consistent in the league. Of course, that’s not going to change under Wenger, but considering his deal is coming to an end, a new manager having Ozil and Fekir could make Arsenal into a potent unit.

Lest we forget, Fekir also had a brilliant partnership with Lacazette who has struggled in his debut season at North London, so perhaps signing Fekir could change the fortunes of his compatriot.
