Contrary to popular belief, Celtic striker, Moussa Dembele is not the only striker from the Scottish Premiership to be on the radar of Premier League clubs. As per one of the recent reports by the Birmingham Mail, West Bromwich Albion are keen on signing Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths in the ongoing transfer window.
Griffiths was heavily linked with the Baggies in the summer, but the move failed to materialise. However, it appears that they have renewed their interest to sign the striker in order to beef up their attacking arsenal. Their inclination makes complete sense, for he is undoubtedly a player of fine calibre and his entry into Alan Pardew’s side would certainly enhance their firepower.
The Baggies need some goals…
West Brom are in all sorts of trouble in the league as they are placed 19th with 16 points from 22 games. Their last win dates back to August 2017, which was a 1-0 win against Burnley and there hasn’t been much to show for after that. Some sort of resurrection is the call of the hour and seeing their current stature, it goes without saying that they must do some shrewd business this month.
Griffiths has been more like a deputy under the tutelage of Brendan Rodgers with the Bhoys. He has accumulated 17 Scottish Premiership appearances so far this season, 9 of them being starts, and has scored 6 goals in the process. He would be looking to find a club where he is likely to get more game under his belt. His stats don’t really inspire confidence though as he has failed to break into the starting XI consistently.
The Scottish international has a lot of experience, having plied his trade with Livingston, Dundee, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Hibernian and Celtic and is a good attacker in the final third. He is someone who knows exactly where the goal is, is good in his movement. However, the transition from the Scottish league to the Premier League isn’t easy.
West Brom really need to inject some winning mentality into their squad and given that Griffiths has won enough with the Bhoys, he could add some value to the squad. Interestingly, Crystal Palace are also closely monitoring him.
Alan Pardew’s side have mustered just 16 goals so far in the league and need all the attacking reinforcements that they can get. Griffiths is a decent striker, but might not be the answer the Baggies are looking for.
