Tottenham Hotspur asked to pay £26.5m for La Liga star: Should they sign him? 1

The conundrum

As per latest reports by talkSPORT, Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro in the ongoing transfer window. He was targeted by the club last summer, but a move failed to materialise.

Despite the recent interest from Spurs, there is apparently a conundrum as there is a disagreement between the two clubs involved. While Spurs are keen to sign Gameiro on loan for the rest of the season, the La Liga giants are only willing to let him leave permanently and have slapped a price tag of £26.5million on him.

Gameiro – Fact file

Gameiro kicked off his senior career with Strasbourg and then moved to Lorient. After decent spells at both the clubs, he moved to the ranks of Paris Saint-Germain, where he stayed for a couple of seasons. Later, he was signed by Sevilla before eventually moving to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2016. He has been a regular goal-getter at every club which is why his price is still pretty high.

So far this season, he has mustered 4 goals and 1 assist in 13 games in Spanish top flight. He also found the back of the net in the Champions League once this season in 3 appearances. However, he has been sporadically used this campaign under the tutelage of Diego Simeone.

Attributes

The 30-year-old is a prolific finisher and is someone who is always in the right place at the right time. Gameiro had an impressive spell at Sevilla and won the UEFA Cup with Los Rojiblancos. A tally of 39 goals from 92 games led to a move to rivals Atletico. Though Gameiro is 30, he still has a decent burst of pace. His composure in front of goal is his best trait and he could be a pretty good alternative to Harry Kane.

Gameiro’s best spell with Sevilla came in the 2015/16 season where he scored 16 league goals in 31 games. His best spell for his current club was last season where he mustered 12 goals and five assists, not bad eh?

Do Spurs need him?

Pochettino has heavily relied on Harry Kane once again this season and the Englishman has yielded the results once again. However, the Lilywhites lack a perfect back-up for Kane, as Fernando Llorente has, in no manner whatsoever, and they do need a quality striker in their ranks for the second-half of the season.
