Newcastle United keen on versatile Chelsea midfielder: Is he a quality option?

Rafa benitez

As per one of the recent reports by the Express, Newcastle United are interested in luring Chelsea’s Brazilian starlet Kenedy to St. James’ Park in a loan deal. Kenedy has really struggled break into the first team and is yet to get a start in the Premier League. It is important for him to play regularly and merely 1 start in the FA Cup and 3 games in the League Cup haven’t aided his development at all.

The Magpies are keen to sign him on loan this month in order to beef up their squad. However, there is a twist. The youngster can ply his trade as a left-back as well as a left-wingback and considering that Marcos Alonso is the only recognised left-wingback for the Blues, it is perceived that the Blues are reluctant to let him leave without a proper backup for Alonso.

Conte’s side have European commitments to meet, apart from their Premier League, League Cup and FA Cup games and naturally, they need the requisite amount of personnel to face the congested fixtures up ahead. Nonetheless, Rafael Benitez should leave no stone unturned to sign Kenedy, for he desperately needs some reinforcements himself.

Kenedy emerged through the youth ranks of Vasco da Gama and Fluminense and after having played for the senior side of the latter, he was signed by Chelsea in the summer of 2015. He was shipped out on loan to Watford last season but the spell hardly met the expectations as he was plagued with injuries which hindered his progress.

He has been with Chelsea for a substantial period of time but is yet to make a mark with his current employers and thus, a loan spell with a Premier League outfit might be a welcome change for the Englishman. The 21-year-old is still young and possesses immense calibre, but it is of paramount importance for him to play regularly.

The Toon were interested in securing a loan deal in the summer as well but it failed to cross the line. Benitez’s side are currently placed 13th in the league table with 22 points to their name after 22 games. They are still in the relegation scrap and unless they can sign better players, the Magpies will have a nervous time from now until the end of the season.

Kenedy could solve two problems; that of a left-back and a left-winger, so he’s one the club should continue to pursue.
