Everton player ratings vs Tottenham Hotspur: Pickford impressive again, others disappoint

Everton

A ship that Sam Allardyce had seemed to sail is sort of starting to sink again now. Everton were thrashed 4-0 by a rejuvenated Spurs’ side; the result being the gaffer’s worst defeat at his new club. The Toffees played a dull game from their perspective and looked rusty going forward.

Moreover, constant attacking pressing from the hosts saw the Toffees being dominated in the second half. Let us see how the Everton players fared in the game.

Jordon Pickford: 7/10

Pickford could not have done much with any of the goals as they were clean strikes from close range. However, he did well whenever he was called into action and even denied Eriksen and Dele Alli with a double save in the second half.

Jonjoe Kenny: 6/10

Kenny was caught out of position while defending but made some good supporting runs on the flank.

Mason Holgate: 7/10

Holgate was the best defender tonight. The youngster showed immense maturity during 1v1 scenarios and should be given a longer run on the team.

Phil Jagielka: 5/10

Struggled with the pace of the game. Against teams who have plenty of pace, he isn’t the right choice at the back.

Cuco Martina: 5/10

Martina was partly guilty of allowing Serge Aurier on a free run as he failed to mark the Ivorian for the first goal. The fullback hardly provided anything going forward and had a rather mediocre performance.

Idrissa Gueye: 7/10

One of the better players for Everton, Gueye was an assuring presence at the centre of the park. He broke down attacks and then initiated them by making some precise forward passes.

James McCarthy: 6.5/10

McCarthy provides that extra bit of bite to Everton’s midfield. He was tenacious but gave away too many free kicks. Still doesn’t seem at 100%.

Yannick Bolasie: 4.5/10

Bolasie looked rusty after just coming off his knee injury and delivered a rather underwhelming performance in terms of end product. Will need some more matches to get back into the groove.

Wayne Rooney: 5/10

Rooney had a goal disallowed goal in the first half and that was his only major involvement in front of goal. He often dropped back into his own half and had minimal movement in the opposition box.

Gylfi Sigurdsson: 7/10

Sigurdsson unleashed his creativity sometimes and gave ample indications as to why he deserves to play in the central attacking midfield position.

Cenk Tosun: 5.5/10

Tosun will undoubtedly take time to adjust to the English game. He was caught offside on some occasions but showed good intent by attempting to take on defenders regularly.

Substitutes

Aaron Lennon: 5/10

Did not provide the attacking width that he was expected to.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin: 6/10

Used his pace to a good effect by being successful in getting behind the defenders on some occasions. Struggled to get a clear attempt on goal though.

Morgan Schneiderlin: 5/10

The Frenchman was brought in to add some more energy at the centre of the park.
