Liverpool player ratings vs Manchester United: Wijnaldum and Moreno impress in stalemate

dejan lovren

Liverpool failed to take more than a point against Manchester United as Jose Mourinho’s ploy to use 3 at the back seemed worked and stifled Liverpool’s attacking threat for most of the game.

The visitors were, unsurprisingly set up to frustrate the hosts and almost took away a victory but Romelu Lukaku failed to convert a glorious chance even as Mohamed Salah and Joel Matip constantly troubled De Gea at the other end.

The frustration continues for the Reds but United will be happy with the result, given the way they were set up. Here are the player ratings for Liverpool in this game:

Simon Mignolet (6)

Was hardly tested except a decent chance from Lukaku, which he did well to keep away.

Joe Gomez (7)

Lost Martial and gave him a couple of unnecessary free-kicks but otherwise, put in a confident performance at right-back.

Joel Matip (7)

Solid at the back as he won almost everything thrown at him, helping his side to a clean sheet. Almost scored at the other end.

Dejan Lovren (7)

His best game since the pre-season as he always got the better of Lukaku and cut out the long-ball that United often used to find the Belgian.

Alberto Moreno (7.5)

Lost the ball too easily on a couple of occasions but did well to win it back and showed great hunger to justify his starting role.

Jordan Henderson (8)

Won the ball an innumerable number of times in the midfield keeping pressure on United but could have done a bit better in creating chances in attack.

Emre Can (7)

Full of energy all night as he got a couple of half-chances on a night where he was a more attacking force than he usually is.

Georginio Wijnaldum (7)

Brilliant with his twists and turns along with his endless running, which allowed his side to dominate the middle of the park. Can he replicate it in away games though?

Mohamed Salah (7)

Should have scored more than a goal on the night and was a constant threat to the Red Devils with his pace and industry in attack.

Philippe Coutinho (7)

Was frustrated by a few fouls but did really well to create a couple of chances and keep the Red Devils on their toes.

Roberto Firmino (6)

Still looks low on confidence and was hardly seen in positions where he can score goals. Needs to improve to help Liverpool find the back of the net more regularly.

Substitutes

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (7)

Was sublime in everything he did in the last 15 minutes of the game as he looked determined to make on impact on the biggest game of the season yet.

Daniel Sturridge (6)

Won a couple of fouls but could not help Liverpool break the deadline, having come on with less than 15 minutes to play.

Dominic Solanke (6)

His presence in the box late in the game allowed Liverpool to put pressure till the final whistle but he hardly even got a touch of the ball.
