Midfielders disappoint: Tottenham Hotspur player ratings from their 1-2 loss against Chelsea

tottenham hotspur

Tottenham were handed a 2-1 defeat as Marcos Alonso scored twice in each half to give Chelsea the victory at Wembley. Alonso scored a beautiful free kick in the first half to give Chelsea the lead and got another one after Eriksen leveled the proceedings.

Despite a lot of possession, Tottenham failed to take their chances in contrast to Chelsea who capitalised on the handful of theirs. This game suggested need for offensive reinforcements for Tottenham who have added only a single player this summer. Below are Tottenham’s player ratings:

Hugo Lloris

Rating: 5

The Frenchman seemed a bit shaky and was also responsible for the second Chelsea goal which should have been easily saved.

Kieran Trippier

Rating: 6

Trippier failed to impress, making a lot of mistakes in crossing the ball despite having sufficient time and space.

Toby Alderweireld

Rating: 6

Alderweireld did well to make some early blocks but was only a spectator as Alonso scored a second.

Jan Vertonghen

Rating: 6

Vertonghen also made some good tackles and did well to cover-up for Davies who was often caught high up the pitch.

Ben Davies

Rating: 7

Davies was one of the few players who had a decent game. Despite getting into really good positions his crosses were unimpressive. He was a good defensively, though.

Eric Dier

Rating: 5

Dier made a few rash tackles and failed to have an impact defensively as Chelsea played often went unhindered on the counter.

Victor Wanyama

Rating: 5

Wanyama tried to do too much and lost the ball a few times trying to dribble past players. He also gave the ball away which resulted in Chelsea’s second goal.

Moussa Dembele

Rating: 8

Dembele was the only player who seemed to have turned up for a game this big. He out-muscled his way past the Chelsea players a number of times. Undoubtedly the best player on the pitch for Spurs.

Christian Eriksen

Rating: 7

Eriksen was decent throughout the game but his influence was limited with Chelsea players often crowding him out in the midfield. His delivery from the free-kick allowed Spurs to equalise as Batshuayi accidentally headed into his own net.

Dele Alli

Rating: 6

Alli failed to impact the game and wildly hit the first shot off the target. Apart from a few nutmegs, his performance wasn’t really encouraging.

Harry Kane

Rating: 6

Kane failed to finish off as many as three very good chances and was unlucky to hit the post once.

Substitutes

Heung-Min Son

Rating: 6

Son didn’t seem much of the ball and didn’t really influence the game much.

Moussa Sissoko

Rating: N/A

Sissoko played too little to warrant a rating.

Vincent Janssen

Rating: N/A

Janssen played too little to warrant a rating.
