Tottenham Hotspur’s summer transfer window seems to have started after the turn of the month as after a quiet July, Mauricio Pochettino is now vigorously looking for additions to his squad for the upcoming season. They are active in four different competitions yet again so Spurs will need all the depth they can acquire, in addition to some first team signings and the latest name extensively linked with a move to the club is Giovanni Simeone.
Transfer story
According to reports from English outfit Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are now interested in bringing Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone’s son Giovanni Simeone to shore up his attack for the upcoming campaign. Also linked with a move for Max Meyer, Spurs are desperate for some attacking quality for the first team and the Argentine boss wants his fellow countryman to make a difference next season.
History and style of play
Born and brought up in Madrid, Spain, the 22-year old youngster started his youth career with River Plate, one of the most prestigious academies in South America. He moved into the first team at the club in 2013 but failed to impress enough to establish himself in the first team until last season, when he joined Italian outfit Genoa.
With 12 goals and an assist in 35 league games in Italy, Simeone managed to make himself a name and is now one of the most exciting attackers in the country. He has also represented Argentina in the U23 level and is not too far away from the senior side, making him a decent option for Spurs.
Known for his deadly finishing and cool head in the final third, the 22-year old loves to have the ball at his feet as he has decent dribbling and passing skills, which make him effective in the final third. His touch is exemplary while his smart understanding of the game allows him to keep the defenders at bay. He still has to work on his body strength and aerial abilities but is surely a star in the making.
Chances with Spurs
Pochettino spent on the likes of Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko to add quality to his attack in recent transfer windows but neither player has been impressive, forcing the manager to use Heung-Min Son on a regular basis on the wing and also as a false-9.
Simeone is not a major upgrade on Janssen but is surely a better-suited player to Pochettino’s style of play and the English conditions and surely, he can have more of an impact on the squad than the Dutchman. He will be a like for like replacement for Harry Kane in the domestic competitions and surely improve the club’s strength in attack.
However, he is far from a first team option and Spurs should make sure that they can add another attacker of high quality, who can walk into the first team when needed.
