The stars and the duds: Chelsea player ratings from their Community Shield loss

The stars and the duds: Chelsea player ratings from their Community Shield loss 1

Thibaut Courtois – (6/10)

A few really good saves, overshadowed by the fact that he made a meal of the penalty kick, that messed up the momentum of his team in the shootout and eventually resulted in their loss.

Cesar Azpilicueta- (6.5/10)

Looked good at the back at times and while pushing forward as well, though he could have done more for his teams as the Blues did not create too many clear chances.

David Luiz- (6.5/10)

Again a defensive asset for his side and took a knock for his efforts, when he collided with Cahill. His free-kicks threatened as well, though he never scored.

Gary Cahill (c)- (6.5/10)

Took out Mertesacker unintentionally in the first half and led his team rather well against a resilient Arsenal side.

Marcos Alonso- (7.5/10)

Looked solid against the pace of his compatriot Hector Bellerin, who was having a really tough time keeping tabs on Alonso both at the back and when he pushed forward as well.

Victor Moses- (8/10)

A great game for Moses who was a major threat while going forward and opened the scoring with a superb finish for his team. Unfortunate to finish on the losing side.

Cesc Fabregas- (5/10)

Poor performance for the former Arsenal man, who was being booed by the crowd at Wembley every time he had the ball at his feet. Played some long balls which were ineffective most times, though they did cause a scare among the opposition defence at times. Missed having Costa up front.

N’Golo Kante- (7.5/10)

A composed player who kept stealing the ball from the Arsenal players and made some decent runs in the middle of the park. One of the better players for Chelsea, though the end result would have disappointed him as well.

Willian- (5.5/10)

Nothing substantial by the Brazilian after a positive start and failed to really influence the game, when it mattered the most.

Pedro- (4/10)

A night to forget for the “masked crusader”, who failed to make a major impact with the ball at his feet. His lazy and tiring challenge on Elneny saw him being sent off which was one of the main reasons for the Chelsea loss.

Michy Batshuayi- (4.5/10)

Barely visible in a game where he needed to really show his skills up front at challenging the Arsenal defence. He could not link up with Fabregas well and did not have any major impact on the game.

Substitutes

Alvaro Morata- (4.5/10)

Did show a bit of energy on a couple of occasions on his debut for Chelsea, though it resulted into nothing. His penalty was also horrific and partly responsible for the loss as well. He could have been a hero, yet his expressions at the end said it all.

Antonio Rudiger- (5/10)

Came on in the second half and did not look himself. Played a few passes and made a few soft tackles. Was at fault for the goal that was conceded, as he let Kolasinac make the run and claim a freely headed goal.

Charly Musonda- (5.5/10)

Came on towards the end of the match and made a few decent runs, yet ended up giving away the ball eventually.
