3 players who could have replaced Coutinho at Liverpool

Right, in a transfer window that saw plenty of action, Liverpool were at the heart of it all. While the biggest talking point was the record-breaking move for Phillipe Coutinho – the highest transfer fee involving a player in the winter transfer window – Virgil van Dijk’s transfer also created a record for being the highest fee paid for a centre-back.

Liverpool agreed a move for Naby Keita last summer and many wanted him to make his way to Anfield in the ongoing window, but that wasn’t to be. Now, the Reds have lost their best attacker and haven’t replaced him with anyone, a move that may have repercussions in the coming months as Jürgen Klopp’s attack has weakened a quite a bit.

Going back to the window, there could have been quite a few things the club could have done. Signing players on a cheap is never easy in January, but the Reds themselves have mustered deals in the past; Joel Matip and Danny Ings being prime examples.

Liverpool needed a player who could have fit in the Coutinho role and we’ve compiled a list of whom the club could have gone after…

#3 Max Meyer

Leon Goretzka was one player who was linked with a myriad of clubs but eventually moved to Bayern Munich. While Liverpool were interested, what they should have done was go after his teammate Max Meyer.

Meyer’s contract also runs out in the summer and unlike Goretzka, he’s actually played more and has impressed in a position he wasn’t familiar with. Under Domenico Tedesco, Meyer has been deployed in front of the defence to ensure a smoother transition from defence to attack and he has managed to shine in that role.

The German can also play a number 10 role, so he could have been a good replacement for Coutinho as he has that pass to unlock a defence
